This play
is about looking for feelings of safety and righteousness in mankind’s construction of religion and being oblivious
of true spiritual forces. The play centers on a war in Heaven between God and
the angels. What that means for Marisol, a Puerto Rican woman living in the Bronx is that her guardian
angel has left her and she must fend for herself. In the first act, she goes
through her regular routine, but is constantly seeking refuge from the violent forces around her. The box of the set is her Bronx with the heavenly realm above. The ceiling is not the truth about the spiritual realm, but man’s idea of it. It is flat and unchanging. The scenes appear on the turntable. In Act II, the world has exploded and is splayed open and vulnerable. Now Marisol just tries to survive and gather any familiar influences around her. The turntables spin constantly throughout the act so that the landscape is continually shifting. Marisol is killed at the end and her angel reappears scarred but triumphant. There is a note of hope for a new regime.
