Let the Sunshine in!

This is my first lighting design.  We decided that the creative team should partially overlook our roles as lighting designer, costume designer, and set designer and director and approach it as artists trying to create images.  We decided to use the flag as a symbol throughout to mark important moments in the growth of the characters.  We see it born at the beginning and cover a coffin at the end.  I designed the lights in an asymmetrical plot.  I had low and high angle side light from one side and high side from the other.  I used a front no color system for fill and a back system with color scrollers to color the space.  Sometimes I had live scrolls in active songs.  One of my favorite cues was when the central character gets shot.  He was lit entirely with green shinbusters.  At each shot, the back system with red gels bumped up 20 percent so the space was overtaken by blood red.
